Bits and Pieces

The UConn woman’s basketball team won their 89th straight game last night breaking the Division 1 record of 88 straight set by John Wooden’s UCLA Bruins.  Regardless of how you measure this accomplishment winning 89 straight of anything is special.  Will it replace the Bruins as one of my all-time greatest teams?  No.  I played against that UCLA team.

Is an iPad on your Christmas list? It shouldn’t be according to some.  Since when do we wait for all the technology stars to align before making the plunge?  If you did you’d still be using an abacus.

Last week the FDA decided to withdraw regulatory approval for the life extending cancer drug Avastin for women with advanced breast cancer.  Once again the FDA has demonstrated that they are more concerned with doing harm than saving lives.  Isn’t that what physicians are trained to do – do no harm?  Patients need to have every available option at their disposal to fight cancer and it is up to the physician and patient to determine how to use them.

Tim Tebow is in the news again, this time as quarterback-in-training of the Denver Broncos.  Two national championships and a Heisman trophy haven’t deterred those talking heads who can’t tie their shoes or walk a flight of stairs without getting winded from giving him no chance to succeed.  I hope he succeeds.  It would be nice to see a good guy finish first for once.

Son #1 turns 22 years old tomorrow. Hard to believe as it seems like only yesterday I was carrying him down the hallway of Los Gatos-Saratoga Community Hospital in the Bay Area to his waiting grandparents.

Have a Merry Christmas everyone!
