Troy Tulowitzski just signed a long term deal with the Colorado Rockies and I couldn’t be happier.
Past long term contracts the Rockies have doled out have ended up in disaster, but they have involved pitchers (and Todd Helton, but that is a different situation). Tulo is a Cal Ripkin or Derek Jeter type of player. He can wow you in the field with his range and arm and can beat you with his bat. More importantly, he is a leader on and off the field. He is also a player I would pay to watch and in this day and age that is a factor of utmost importance to ownership.
The talking sports heads immediately poo-poohed the deal because they thought he could have gotten more. More than $160 million? Maybe, but who cares – Tulo certainly didn’t. He wants to play here. The other aspect of the deal is the national writers are not convinced the Rockies can win a championship. Perhaps so, but with Tulo in the fold for the next 10 years they have a better chance.
