November 22, 1963

I was in Mrs. Spark’s 6th grade class on the morning of November 22, 1963 when the word came from the principal’s office that President Kennedy had been assassinated.  Mrs. Sparks started crying and from that point forward the world seemed to change.

I always remember this day because it falls one day after my birthday.

My political consciousness seems to have formed at that point.  That day also launched the rest of the volatile 60’s – the civil rights movement, Vietnam, Kent State, Martin Luther King, Bobby Kennedy and Woodstock.

That was a long time ago, but I remember it like it was yesterday.

JFK RIP.
